We are the YWCA Mohawk Valley
The YWCA Mohawk Valley was founded in 1885 and incorporated in 1904. From the beginning we have supported women and their families, helping them in times of need and crisis.
The YWCA serves Oneida and Herkimer Counties via our domestic and sexual violence and violence prevention education programs. Since 1977, we have provided services to victims of domestic and sexual violence. Currently those services include 24-hour confidential hotlines, safety planning, crisis counseling, supportive individual and counseling, accompaniment in court, law enforcement, and medical settings, advocacy regarding medical care, social service needs, housing, employment assistance, and crime victim compensation, and information and referrals.
Our residential programs include Hall House, a 16-bed domestic violence shelter, Lucy's House, a 6-bed domestic violence safe dwelling, New Horizons, a residential program for runaway and homeless girls, and Willow Commons, a transitional housing program for homeless victims of domestic violence.
In Herkimer County, in addition to our work with adult sexual violence victims, we also operate a child advocacy center (CAC) that brings together a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement, child protective services, district attorney's office, mental health services, and victim advocates. This team works collectively to ensure the uniform handling of child sexual and severe physical abuse cases and helps victims and their non-offending family members heal.
By providing these services, the YWCA generates awareness, provides support, enhances life skills, and increases personal safety. Perhaps most importantly, our work gives victims of sexual and domestic violence a voice and helps them heal.
