Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a kindergarten through twelveth grade anti-bullying program that has been researched since the 1970's in England, Germany, Canada, and the United States.

The major goal of BPP is the reduction of victim/bully problems among primary and secondary school children.  It aims to increase awareness of the problem and knowledge about it, to achieve active involvement on the part of teachers and parents to develop clear rules agains bullying behavior, and to provide support and protection for the victims of bullying.  Intervention occurs at the school level, class level and individual level and can be intergrated into character education.

In Bergen, Norway the frequency of bully/victim problems decreased by 50% or more in the two years following the campaign.  These results applied to both boys and girls and to students across all grades studied.  In addition, school climate improved and anti-social behavior in general such as theft, vandalism, and truancy showed a drop during these years.

Scope of the Problem

100,000 children stay home from school everyday in this country because of bullying.  In a study done by the Secret Service of 14 incarcerated youth who had perpetrated violence in their schools, all cited bullying as a contributing factor to their actions.  Bullying is a scourge across this country.
