"New Horizons has helped me in so many ways and if this program was not here I have no idea where I would be right now. They have given me life-skills training that will help me when I leave, they have helped me get a job, which I will need to support myself and my baby, they are there when I need someone to talk to, and they have given me freedom to get ready for both motherhood and adulthood."
- 18 Yr. Old Resident Of New Horizons
New Horizons is a residential facility that provides shelter, support services and counseling to female youth ages 16-21 that are unable to return to live at home, often due to abuse or neglect.
New Horizons helps young women build foundations for trust, responsibility and success. Staff provide them with educational support and vocational guidance to become self-sufficient. Residents receive counseling and are linked to the resources they need to build safe and healthy lives. More importantly, staff listen to their concerns, respond to their needs, stand by them in times of frustration and congratulate them in times of success.
Founded in 1993, New Horizons was established by a group of residents, clergy and business people who began to share concerns about the alarming increase in drug use, homelessness, prostitution and street activity among girls and young women in our community. In 2005, New Horizons merged with the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley.
We are rooted in the philosophy that young women deserve to live in a safe and secure environment. They deserve to live with caring adults who will assist them in growing toward their full potential.
Staff members at New Horizons recognize and nurture the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of residents while maintaining consistency and structure.
Residents benefit from a home-like atmosphere that nurtures independence and motivates them to succeed in life and the world.
