YWCA MV Holds Virtual Annual Meeting, Welcomes New Board Members, Presents Oreatha Bowens Award

YWCA Mohawk Valley (YWCA MV) held their 2020 annual meeting virtually on Thursday, June 25. CEO Dianne Stancato opened the meeting addressing the social unrest across the country and echoed national calls for racial justice and equality.

“We’re on a mission and we’re here to do the work,” she said. “We’ve seen very little progress toward eliminating racism and it’s crucial we work together with our community to create real change. We must demand justice.”

The agency recognized outgoing Board Treasurer U’nice Elliott-Jefferson as well as outgoing board members Kate Williams Alcott and Sharon Heyboer.

The Board of Directors elected a new slate of officers for the 2020-21 term:

  • Board President:
Jennifer DeWeerth, Dean of Student Enrollment, Mohawk Valley Community College
  • Vice President:
Cathleen McColgin, Ph.D., President, Herkimer College
  • Treasurer:
    Carol Steele, Retired
  • Assistant Treasurer:
Matthew Grove, Data Analyst, Indium Corporation
  • Secretary:
Pamela Matt, Esq., Executive Director, Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program

The Board welcomed four new members Sonya Ezell, Hedy Hage, Dietra Harvey, and Olivia Paul. New members and returning members Matthew Grove, Cathleen McColgin, and Zora Thomova will serve three-year terms ending in 2023.

Leadership at YWCA MV also recognized employee Regina Ionta for her years of dedication to the mission and passion for her work.

Every year, YWCA MV presents the Oreatha Bowens Award to a deserving employee or volunteer who always goes above and beyond for the agency. Oreatha Bowens was a well-loved employee of YWCA MV who passed away in 2004. Named in her honor, the award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the mission and demonstrates outstanding leadership, devotion, and achievement in the workplace.

Regina’s career at YWCA MV began in 2015 as a Case Manager. Now, as Director of Client Services, she oversees the agency’s shelters and housing programs. Gina, as she’s known around the office, was nominated for this honor by a YWCA MV Case Manager who said “She genuinely cares and gives 110% to helping others…. Gina has shown me what it takes to be a leader and confident.”
